Sixty seconds with Marcus Sakey...
Marcus Sakey was born in Michigan and worked in advertising and marketing for ten years before moving into crime fiction writing. He is the author of THE BLADE ITSELF, AT THE CITY'S EDGE and GOOD PEOPLE.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Sakey: Story addict, long-time geek, and wicked good cook, rocking an afro.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Sakey: In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, by Neutral Milk Hotel. Thus far, I've not gotten bored of it.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Sakey: What I grew up to be. A novelist living in a great city with a hot wife. Nice when life works out.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Sakey: I'm lucky when it comes to friends. Usually once we hit a certain level, it sticks for good.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Sakey: I'd get Joss Whedon to bring back Firefly. I'd issue a proclamation that every bar needs to have at least a couple of taps of good American craft beer. And vampire novels would be banned. Seriously, aren't we done with them yet?
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Sakey: This is a trick question, because if I'd written it, then I couldn't read it the same way. Which means if I pick, say, CLOUD ATLAS by David Mitchell, I would be crediting myself with an absolute masterpiece, but then never able to read the thing again. So instead, let's go with THE DAVINCI CODE. I could give a rat's ass about re-reading it, but the royalties would be nice.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Sakey: People who don't listen. Especially if they try to guess what I'm going to say.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Sakey: Barack Obama, David Foster Wallace, Muhammed Ali, Martin Scorcese, and Ira Glass. How fucking interesting would that conversation be?
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Sakey: Dick Cheney.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Sakey: Reading. I've been in love with story as long as I can remember.
Specifically, getting fired was a nice push, too.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Sakey: I live in Chicago, and love it. In a perfect world, every year I'd spend two or three months living somewhere else: New York, Amsterdam, Rome, Costa Rica, ooh, and a big cruising sailboat, say a 36' Hunter. That would be not so bad.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Sakey: What happens when your best friends become your worst enemies?
