Sixty seconds with Sulari Gentill...
A reformed lawyer, Sulari Gentill is the award-winning author of the Rowland Sinclair Mysteries, which chronicle the life and adventures of her 1930s Australian gentleman artist, and the Hero Trilogy, based on the myths and epics of the ancient world. She lives on a small farm in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, where she grows French Black Truffles and writes about murder and mayhem. Sulari.s most recent US releases include "Crossing the Lines," an unusual postmodern crime novel, and "Paving the New Road," the 4th Rowland Sinclair mystery
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Gentill: Sulari Gentill writes; occasionally she’ll come out of the world in her head to participate in the real one, but she never seems to stay for long.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Gentill: Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens (now Yusef Islam)
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Gentill: When I was growing up I wanted to be a writer, and a movie star, an astronaut, and a cowboy. I became a lawyer. It was only after I’d been practising for a number years that it occurred to me that though I’d probably never headline a playbill, go to Mars, or clean up a gun-slinging town, I could still be a writer. Fortunately the law is an excellent apprenticeship for those who wish to spend their lives making things up!
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Gentill: Leith Henry, who I’ve known since I was 12 years old. We met in school, fought regularly, conspired daily, wrote plays that starred us, and navigated adolescence together. We shared mad, grand dreams and $2 buckets of hot chips which we used our train fare to purchase. Today we are still fast and true friends… Leith reads and comments on all my manuscripts and appears in my books from time to time.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Gentill: I would despair at how much work there was to do and try to abdicate in favour of someone who knew what to do… but I would stick around to help.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Gentill: The Great Gatsby
RTE: What makes you angry?
Gentill: Hypocrisy, insincerity, bigotry, entitlement—the usual things… and being hungry. I’m really grumpy when I’m hungry.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Gentill: Rowland Sinclair, Edna Higgins, Milton Isaacs, Clyde Watson Jones and Harry Simpson – all of whom live primarily in my books. I spend so much time thinking about them, I’ve always wondered what they’d think of me. At dinner I could ask them. I like to believe we’d all rub along splendidly, but after everything I’ve done to them, they could well be bearing a grudge. Perhaps I’ll make sure the food is cleared and they have nothing within reach to throw at me before I broach the subject…
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Gentill: I imagine Donald Trump would make the time pass very slowly.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Gentill: I wasn’t really inspired to start. It was far more mundane a beginning. I was a lawyer—I hadn’t written anything but legal advice and contracts since school. I wasn’t, at the time, aware of any sort of any burning desire to write, but looking back perhaps I was suffering from creative frustration. A serial hobbyist, I’d pick up a hobby, immerse myself in it for a year or so, become bored and move on to another. I’ve quilted, painted, potted, sculpted, grown vegetables, raised cattle and welded. I started writing my first novel in the same way—on whim, as a way of keeping myself occupied for a while. The inspiration came afterwards, from the act of writing and the story itself. And it hasn’t stopped.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Gentill: I currently live on a small trufferie in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and, for the most part, this place and I are perfectly matched, but occasionally, during hot Australian summers, I think I might like to live in Alaska.
