Robert Fate has won an Oscar for Technical Achievement, has worked as an oilfield roughneck, a TV cameraman, a fashion model and a chef. And he's the author of BABY SHARK and BABY SHARK'S BEAUMONT BLUES.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Fate: Robert Fate is a young, brilliant, devastatingly handsome, infinitely talented, pathological liar.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Fate: Sketches of Spain – Miles Davis.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Fate: An actor. Always an actor until I read e.e. cummings. Then I wanted to be a writer.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Fate: Robin Bright, a widely collected fine artist from San Diego. We met in Paris in 1959 and have been like brothers since. If you appreciate fine art, you need something by him on your wall.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Fate: The New York Times would review the Baby Shark series and I would end world hunger…or perhaps the other way around.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Fate: For sheer sales figures: the bible. But if we are saying contemporary and in the genre: The Bottoms by Joe Lansdale.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Fate: People who are unable to restrain their anger.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Fate: Dame Helen Mirren, Mick Jagger, Susan Sarandon, Richard Gere, Shilpa Shetty, and their guests and my family and friends, an exceptional dinner, and wines selected by JT Ellison.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Fate: Shakira. Only so much can be expected of a married man.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Fate: Poetry: Love.
Journals: Travel.
Short stories: The challenge.
Magazine articles: Business.
Stage Plays: The thrill of a live audience.
Screenplays: The movie The Wild Bunch.
Novels: A swift boot to my behind from my friend and fellow author, Bruce Cook.
