Sixty seconds with Stephen Booth...
Former journalist Stephen Booth is the author of the Diane Fry and Ben Cooper series, set in the UK's Peak District. His latest book is DYING TO SIN.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Booth: Just another ex-journalist, who lives in his own fictional world and doesn't cause too much trouble.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Booth: Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's a record I can listen to over and over – and its lyrics are appropriate for someone stuck on a desert island!
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Booth: A writer, of course! I never had any doubt about it from the age of 12, when I finished writing my first novel.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Booth: My wife Lesley. She's been my friend for 35 years.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Booth: ... then things would REALLY be in a mess.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Booth: No matter which book I chose, it wouldn't be as good if I'd written it. But I suppose it would have to be Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've even been asked to sign a few copies of that one.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Booth: Cruelty, injustice, hypocrisy.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Booth: Douglas Adams, P.G. Wodehouse, Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Writers don't always behave well in their private lives, but most of them make good dinner guests.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Booth: A bunch of politicians all talking at once!
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Booth: Reading. It's as simple as that – one seemed to follow naturally from the other.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Booth: I've always hankered after living in the West Highlands of Scotland, or one of the Hebridean islands. Although I love the Peak District, where the Cooper & Fry novels are set, it's useful not to live there – distance provides a better perspective.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Booth: A story of superstition, forgotten people – and bodies buried in the farmyard.
