Sixty seconds with Neil Plakcy...
Assistant college professor Neil Plakcy is the author of the Mahu series, featuring gay Hawaiian cop Kimo Kanapa'aka. He writes both fiction and non-fiction, and has contributed to a number of anthologies.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Plakcy: Like David M Pierce’s private eye Vic Daniel, I am a tall man in a Hawaiian shirt.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Plakcy: Bruce Springsteen’s Greatest Hits.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Plakcy: A funeral director. Interestingly, in my current career choice of mystery writer I’m dealing with dead bodies, too.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Plakcy: I met my friend Andrew in homeroom in 7th grade. Since then we went to college together, business school together, lived across the street from each other in NYC, and then both moved to Florida.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Plakcy: Chocolate would have no calories!
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Plakcy: Laurie Colwin’s Happy All The Time. I wish I had her attention to detail, sense of humor and generosity of spirit.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Plakcy: According to my partner, the answer to this question should be “Any time I don’t get my way.”
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Plakcy: John Barrowman, Rupert Everett, Reichen Leimkuhl, Anderson Cooper and porn star Colton Ford. (They’re all naked, right?)
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Plakcy: My ex-girlfriend.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Plakcy: A 10th grade assignment to rewrite A Separate Peace by John Knowles from Finny’s point of view.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Plakcy: Hawaii. That’s a no-brainer, isn’t it, considering I’ve written three books set there?
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Plakcy: Kimo Kanapa’aka investigates a bombing at a gay marriage fundraiser in Honolulu.
