Stuart Pawson worked as a mining electrical engineer and in the probation service before turning to crime writing. He is the creator of the DI Charlie Priest series, set in the mythical Yorkshire town of Heckley. GRIEF ENCOUNTERS is the latest in the series.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Pawson: Stuart is a mean-spirited, duplicitous, egotistical, unscrupulous, backstabbing hypocrite with a propensity for understatement.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Pawson: Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Pawson: Taller. And a speedway rider. A tall speedway rider.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Pawson: It must be Ron Brown. We went through school together and have recently met up again.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Pawson: I’d make chewing gum a Class A drug, and introduce umbrella licences.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Pawson: My next one, but I’ll settle for Len Deighton’s Goodbye Mickey Mouse.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Pawson: Crooks who rob and swindle people who are much less well off than they are.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Pawson: Neil Armstrong, Richard Dawkins, Joan Baez, Maureen Lipman and Arthur Scargill.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Pawson: The lift repair man.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Pawson: Necessity, and a belief that I could do it.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Pawson: Overwintering in Sedona, Arizona, sounds inviting.
