Sixty seconds with Gail Bowen...
Former university lecturer Gail Bowen is the author of the Joanne Kilbourn series. Eleven have been published so far featuring the university professor/sometime political columnist as well as wife, mother and grandmother. Toronto-born Gail is also a playwright.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Bowen: In my personal life and in my career, I've always gotten everything I wanted but five years later than I was desperate to have it.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Bowen: The Ravel quartet in F by the Juilliard String Quartet.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Bowen: A writer -- hey there's one wish that took way longer than five years.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Bowen: Joan Whittaker Cross -- 63 years ago, I went to her second birthday party and we're still friends.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Bowen: Everyone would have the chances I've had.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Bowen: The Master by Colm Toibin.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Bowen: Lies and liars.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Bowen: Colm Toibin, NY Times columnist Maureen Dowd, my agent Bella Pomer, my closest friend Marjorie Gerwing (an Appeals Court judge and hands down the smartest person I've ever known) and my husband Ted Bowen.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Bowen: Bill Clinton.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Bowen: My love of reading.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Bowen: Wherever my husband is -- truly. We've been married 40 years and wherever he is, I'm happy.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Bowen: We should unfailingly be kind because everyone we meet is carrying a great burden.
