Sixty seconds with Jeffery Deaver...
A former journalist, folk singer and attorney, Jeffery Deaver is the author of 26 novels -- including The Bone Collector, which was made into a film starring Denzel Washington -- and two collections of short stories. He has collaborated with other top thriller writers on Watchlist, and has been chosen to write a new James Bond novel. His latest novel is Roadside Crosses.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Deaver: A pleasant, rather average, rather boring guy who loves to think up ways to murder people and cause other mayhem for a living.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Deaver: The Guinness world record for catching fish bare-handed in an hour. . . . Oh, you meant musical record? Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Deaver: A novelist.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Deaver: A high school classmate.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Deaver: Laziness would be a felony and stupidity a misdemeanor.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Deaver: The Lord of the Rings.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Deaver: Laziness and stupidity (see above), along with bigotry.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Deaver: Dorothy Parker, Carl Sagan, Winston Churchill, Umberto Eco, Truman Capote.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Deaver: David Brent from the British The Office. Note, not Ricky Gervais, whom I would love to be in a lift with, but I suspect, hearing that, he would answer your question, "Jeffery Deaver."
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Deaver: A love of stories and storytelling.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Deaver: Exactly where I do, on the East Coast of the United States.

Deaver: Online bullies attack a teenager; a policewoman must stop the resulting carnage.
