Sixty seconds with Carin Gerhardsen...
Carin Gerhardsen was originally a mathematician, working as an IT consultant before becoming a writer, and her mathematical knowledge is evident in her books. Her Hammerby series featuring Detective Inspector Conny Sjöberg is set in Stockholm and the second book in the series, THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE, has now been released in the UK by publishers Stockholm Text.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Gerhardsen: I am an adventurous, empathetic, logical and loyal hedonist.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Gerhardsen: Right now it would probably be Supertramp’s “Crisis? What crisis?” The lyrics are brilliant, as well as the music.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Gerhardsen: A professional football player, playing for the Swedish male national team. Or the Brazilian. Girls weren’t supposed to play football when I grew up, but I did anyway, with the boys.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Gerhardsen: Apart from my brother who is one of my dearest friends, it’s Rickard who grew up next door. But if you by “oldest” actually mean oldest, it would be Stig with whom I play tennis several times a week. He’s almost 89 years old and used to play for the Swedish Davis Cup team, and did also play a lot with our late king Gustav V, who passed away in 1950…
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Gerhardsen: there would be liberty, equality, fraternity and love.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Gerhardsen: The fourth part of the exceptional trilogy “Under the North Star” by the Finnish author Väinö Linna. Luckily there’s still time for that.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Gerhardsen: People who take advantage of other’s misfortune.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Gerhardsen: Ian McShane, Lena Headey, James Purefoy, Philip Glenister and Adrian Lester. Obviously in order to discuss the casting for the “The Gingerbread House”!
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Gerhardsen: Bashar al-Assad.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Gerhardsen: The release of Terry Waite back in the early nineties. My first novel was published in 1992, and was about a Swedish man held hostage in Lebanon for four years.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Gerhardsen: South Africa would be a wonderful place to live. But the problem is that I’m not particularly fond of the regime there or the conditions the majority of the people are living in. Which is reason enough not to move there, I’m afraid.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Gerhardsen: A crime novel about evil and the consequences of a horrible childhood.
