Glasgow-born Denise Mina is the author of the Garnethill trilogy and the Paddy Meehan series. Her latest crime novel is Still Midnight. She has also written plays, graphic novels, comics and short stories.

Mina: I am ... answering a quiz.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Mina: Otis Redding singing Amen.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Mina: A missionary/nun/nurse/movie star.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Mina: My cousin Gerry. He's 12 hours younger than me but used to beat me up and make me say he was older.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Mina: Diplomacy would be a fond, distant memory. I'm badly blurty.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Mina: The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Mina: Tiredness, hunger, stress and impatience.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Mina: My partner, my pals Jane and Benny, Chris and Elly. Old friends. I'm not much interested in celebs.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Mina: A smelly person -- even perfume can make me feel sick.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Mina: I was writing a criminology PhD and thought a crime novel would be a better way to disseminate the ideas.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Mina: Exactly here, exactly now.

Mina: Hopefully, a holistic crime novel that humanises the victims, perpetrators and police.
