Sixty seconds with Joanne Harris...
Former teacher Joanne Harris is the author of 11 novels -- including Chocolat, which was made into a film starring Johnny Depp -- plus a collection of short stories and two cookbooks. She plays bass guitar in a band first formed when she was 16 and is currently studying Old Norse.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Harris: Unlikely to conform to whatever it is you expect of me.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Harris: Dire Straits’ Sultans of Swing, which never fails to make me smile.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Harris: A spy.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Harris: Kevin, who knows me best of all . . .
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Harris: I’d kill off a lot of people. It’s probably a good thing I don’t, huh?
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Harris: Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, which reset the bar for the graphic novel.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Harris: Lots of things. Unfairness. Stupidity. Apathy. Lies. Taking things for granted. The slogan “because I’m worth it”. (Because people who use it usually aren’t.)
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Harris: Jules Verne, Ray Bradbury, Bill Bailey, Juliette Binoche and Rolf Harris. I’m somehow sure they’d all get on . . .
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Harris: A fundamentalist (of any persuasion) trying to convert me. That, or Paris Hilton.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Harris: The same thing that inspired me to start reading: a love of stories.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Harris: The LOST island.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Harris: A thriller set in an internet community where fantasy and real-life collide.
