Sixty seconds with Adrian Magson...
Adrian Magson is the author of 12 crime and thriller novels. On the way to becoming a a full-time writer. he's held various jobs, amongst other things, he's been a carpet salesman, a winetaster and a sales representative. His breakthrough came when he started writing for women's magazines. His series featuring Inspector Luca Rocco set in Picardie, France, which started with Death on the Marais and continued with Death on the Rive Nord, reflects the time he spent in France as a child during the late 1950s. The next book in the series, Death on the Pont Noir, will be along shortly. He is also the author of the Harry Tate spy thrillers. He writes the 'Beginners' and New Authors' pages for Writing Magazine and is currently one of the judges on the CWA Short Stories Dagger Award.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Magson: I’m good-natured by default, and underneath that, quite shy.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Magson: ‘Eve of Destruction’ by Barry McGuire. The greatest protest song ever. I could play it at full volume.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Magson: A tall writer. For some reason, 6’2”. No idea why, but it always seemed something to aim for. Didn’t make the height bit.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Magson: Dave the plumber. He takes no s***, cheerfully doesn’t read my books and is always good in a crisis.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Magson: I’d ban politicians mentioning ‘hard decisions’ and ‘doing the right thing’. What else did they think the job would entail?
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Magson: ‘Dangerous Book for Boys’. Fantastic title – must have given palpitations to H&S officials everywhere!
RTE: What makes you angry?
Magson: Drivers on mobile phones.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Magson: Norman Wisdom. David Niven. Audrey Hepburn. John Blashford-Snell. Louis L’Amour.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Magson: A cannibal.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Magson: Reading comics, then books, and thinking I’d love to do the same.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Magson: On a remote farm with Broadband and a huge wine cellar.
