Sixty seconds with Graham Hurley...
Graham Hurley was a TV producer and director before becoming a full-time novelist. His DI Joe Faraday series is based in Hurley's home town of Portsmouth.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Hurley: Cheerful, hungry, cartoon hair, crooked smile. I know visual clues mask all kinds of wickedness but there you have it . . .
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Hurley: Impossible question (whatever happened to the other seven choices?) but this afternoon - grey, wet, windy, with a highish tide rasping the beach beneath the window – Schubert's Impromptu no 3 in G flat would be a perfect mix of grace, hope and wistfulness. I love wist.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Hurley: Fighter pilot. My dad was in the RAF during the war and brought home the happiest days of his life. Stir in matinee performances of Reach for the Sky, The Dambusters, and Colditz . . . and what else could I possibly have wanted to be?
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Hurley: Apart from Lin, my wife, it would have to be a very old friend, Tony Howard. A wild man, half-Greek, he taught me everything in my early days as a TV director. Life's been kind to me because we still meet, we still compare notes in an ever-madder world, and we still resolve more or less everything with laughter and good beer.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Hurley: I'd make politicians serve in the wars they create, not in any strategic role but at the sharp end, where it hurts.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Hurley: The End of the Affair (Graham Greene). My adolescence was as vulnerable as everyone else's and at 18 the book made a huge impact. Worryingly, it still does.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Hurley: Celebrity TV . . . Tony Blair . . . the mess that used to be a perfectly decent rail network. Three hates is greedy, I know, but oddly enough they all interlink. UK plc. Enough said.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Hurley: Ernest Shackleton, Robert Oppenheimer, Christina Bielenberg, James Lovelock, Shirley Williams. Why? Because each, either by deed or in person, have burrowed deep into my nest of heroes. I'd wait table and take notes.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Hurley: Anne Robinson. I've yet to work out whether her screen persona is manufactured or the real thing but either way it doesn't matter. If we ended up on the top floor, and I had access to the roof, there might only be one of us riding the lift down . . .
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Hurley: Clacton-on-Sea library. I grew up in a home without TV, the biggest stroke of luck in anyone's writing career, and an armful of books every week led – inevitably – to the Olivetti Lettera 32 and a daunting pile of virgin foolscap. Yes, that long ago . . .
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Hurley: Here (and now). The howl of the wind, the curtains of rain blowing in from the west, that rasp of surf at the top of the tide . . .
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Hurley: Property developer killed. Cabinet minister ditto. Rogue cop tested. Justice nearly done.
