Sixty seconds with John Connolly...
Dublin-born John Connolly is the author of the PI Charlie Parker series, as well as The Book of Lost Things and a collection of short stories (Nocturnes).
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Connolly: Shorter than I should be.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Connolly: A Walk Across the Rooftops by The Blue Nile, although I'm not sure how cheering it would be.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Connolly: A vet, but that was a consequence of reading too many James Herriot books.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Connolly: A guy called Mark. He's in Thailand at the moment. I miss arguing with him.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Connolly: It would be a benevolent dictatorship, rather like God.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Connolly: None. There are books that I love, but I don't wish that they had been published under my name: Bleak House, Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy, Doctor Zhivago, War & Peace, The Good Soldier, Wuthering Heights. If I had written them, they wouldn't be as good.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Connolly: Meanness. Selfishness. Unnecessary noise. Idiots on cellphones. People whose iPod earphones leak sound...
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Connolly: I can never answer that one. Funnily, it would be friends, not great figures. I read a book recently about a group of great writers, artists and musicians who met for dinner in Paris during the last century. It sounded very dull, and they didn't really get along. Dinner parties are too much work to risk that kind of scenario.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Connolly: Someone like me.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Connolly: Reading. It seemed like quite a natural progression to move from reading stories to writing them.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Connolly: I like Dublin, where I live now, but I'd love to spend more time in Portland, Maine. It's a great little city.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Connolly: Stranger comes into town. Trouble ensues. People die. A confrontation. A solution.
