Simon Hall is the BBC's crime correspondent for the South West of England and the author of the TV Detective novels, in which TV reporter Dan Groves and his detective friend Adam Breen work together to solve a series of bizarre crimes.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Hall: Probably as per my intended epitaph – he meant well, tried a few things, bumbled around a bit, amused and entertained a passable number of people and was mostly adequate.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Hall: The live recording of Elvis in the casino doing I Just Can't Help Believing, a wonderful soaring orchestra topped with a voice filled with pure emotion.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Hall: A teacher.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Hall: My father.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Hall: I'd abolish thuggish, loutish, chavvish and antisocial behaviour, inconsideration and rudeness, and semolina too.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Hall: Great Expectations.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Hall: Thuggish, loutish, chavvish and antisocial behaviour, inconsideration and rudeness, but not semolina, that just makes me sick.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Hall: The Queen, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Barack Obama, Nancy Astor.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Hall: Lord Voldermort, although I'd hope his powers would quickly resolve the situation.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Hall: Going on honeymoon (I emphasise because my wife's my muse, not that I was bored), and the bizarre notion I had something to say that people might be interested in.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Hall: Exeter, by the river, in a Grade II listed townhouse, next to a great gastro pub, and happily I've managed all that.
