Sixty seconds with Guillermo Martinez...
Argentine-born writer and mathematician Guillermo Martinez is the author of The Oxford Murders, which has been turned into a film starring John Hurt and Elijah Wood. His latest novel is The Book of Murder.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Martinez: A curious man that agrees with the phrase 'Nothing of the human kind is far from me.'
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Martinez: Symphony From the New World by Dvorak.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Martinez: First a chess player, then a tennis player, finally a writer. I am still trying . . .
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Martinez: The Argentinian writer Pablo De Santis (I met him for the first time in 1992). In the literary world this is indeed a Guinness record.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Martinez: Children wouldn’t die by hunger, that’s for sure.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Martinez: Ficciones by Borges or The Lesson of the Master, The Beast in the Jungle or The Aspern Papers by Henry James.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Martinez: In a broad sense the persistency of capitalism ways of life, the perpetual machinery of making poor people. In the every day life, bureaucracy, Argentinian drivers, some literary critics.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Martinez: The usual group of four friends that I have for dinner, with occasional guests: magician René Lavand, or singer Caetano Veloso, or writer Philip Roth or . . . Jennifer Connelly.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Martinez: With anyone that ate garlic at lunch.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Martinez: My father, himself a very prolific author that never worried to publish his work.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Martinez: Buenos Aires with half of the people would be fine. I liked also London very much.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Martinez: Relatives of a writer’s secretary start to die. Misfortune or murderous revenge?
