Sixty seconds with Neil White...
Neil White left school at 16 and drifted between a variety of jobs before retuirning to full time education and completing a law degree. He became a solicitor and now works as a criminal lawyer as well as writing crime novels. He enjoys rugby league and is married with three children. His latest book, Cold Kill, featuring reporter, Jack Garrett, and Detective Sergeant Luara McGanity was published in June 2011.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
White: Too tall, too grey, too grumpy, too fond of fattening food.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
White: Going Underground by The Jam. My favourite band and the lyrics make being away from it all seem like a good idea.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
White: A policeman.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
White: Duncan, an old college friend. We’re growing old disgracefully.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
White: I would be more assertive, if no one else minded that is.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
White: To Kill A Mockingbird. The only book I’ve read that I’ve wanted to start reading again as soon as I’ve finished it.
RTE: What makes you angry?
White: Management-speak and the half-wits that utter it. Everything is run by idiots with flipcharts.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
White: A young Muhammad Ali, an old Johnny Cash, Oliver Reed and Richard Harris to keep it lively, and Sharon Stone, because it’s my party, okay?
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
White: Katie Price.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
White: Because I love reading, and I just wanted to emulate what I had read.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
White: Around Perpignan in France. Sun and wine and rugby league. Bliss.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
White: Fast-paced and contemporary. Two women killed. Connection? And why like that? Dark.
