Sixty seconds with Grace Monroe...
Grace Monroe is the pseudonym of Linda Watson-Brown and Maria Thomson. Their series stars maverick Scottish lawyer Brodie McLennan.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Monroe: Linda: I am a deadline-stickler, never-distracted ghost writer and crime fiction author who happens to also be very tall and gorgeous without any delusions whatsoever. Maria: I’m like a Labrador – I eat too much and I am very loyal.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Monroe: Linda: Ooooh, ‘records’, that takes me back . . . can’t I make up one of those modern compilation thingies? Otherwise, the Mamas and Papas version of Dream a Little Dream of Me as it reminds me of singing to my babies. Actually, can I be selfish rather than indulgent and go for Wrong Number by The Cure? Maria: Wild Thing by The Troggs.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Monroe: Linda: Happy. Maria: Taller.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Monroe: Linda: None of my friends admit to their real ages – quite right too . . . Maria: A moth-eaten panda named Andrew
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Monroe: Linda: Everything would be sorted, wouldn’t it? Chocolate without calories, Eastenders on for two hours every night, no rewrites or edits on books ever, cheese and onion crisp sandwiches for breakfast, and stationery shops on every corner. Maria: Every child would be encouraged to follow their dreams.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Monroe: Linda: The Gruffalo. Maria: Gone With the Wind
RTE: What makes you angry?
Monroe: Linda: People who have never thought about politics in their lives before suddenly getting all moral about MPs’ expenses and having ‘debates’ about it all that a toddler could shoot holes through. Maria: Men leaving the toilet seat up.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Monroe: Linda: Dorothy Parker, Walt Disney, Mike Tyson, Hugh Hefner, Sarah Beeny - but I’d want the truth from all of them and I’d want dinner with them individually. Maria: Mae West to provide wit and glamour, Bob Marley for the entertainment, Gordon Ramsay for cooking tips, Hugh Laurie because I love House and Anthea Turner to set the table and wash up afterwards.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Monroe: Linda: A golf-loving smoker who wants to talk about cricket and doesn’t know they have b.o. Maria: Gordon Brown.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Monroe: Linda: I can’t remember a time when I didn’t write stories, and I can’t remember a time I couldn’t write – I was inspired by being an only child who was in hospital a lot and who had been brought up to believe that there was a book for everything. Maria: Bedtime stories. I could never get enough and I wanted to write my own.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Monroe: Linda: Disney Princess Castle, Magic Kingdom. Maria: Aspen, Colorado – I love that powder.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Monroe: Linda: Brodie McLennan is faced with crises which will change her life forever. Maria: A dark story of secrets, revenge and a long-awaited payback.
