Karna Small Bodman is a former TV news anchor/reporter and Senior Director of the National Security Council in The White House. She's currently the author of two political thrillers, CHECKMATE and GAMBIT.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Bodman: Tall, blond but organized anyway . . . I try to follow the "Rule of the 6 Ps: Proper preparation precludes piss-poor performance."
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Bodman: The Distance Swimming Record.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Bodman: Thin.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Bodman: My husband (well, he's not really old). He's the first person I call to say, "You'll never believe what happened!"
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Bodman: Seriously, I'd spread freedom of speech and association, freedom from excessive government taxation and regulation, and free and fair elections world-wide.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Bodman: FINAL FINESSE . . . that's my next book that my publisher already bought, but which I haven't finished yet (I hope my editor doesn't read these postings).
RTE: What makes you angry?
Bodman: Cell phones in restaurants, on trains and . . . well, just about everywhere.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Bodman: To better understand the manipulative mindset: Bismark, Rasputin and Machiavelli; but for sheer wit and wisdom: Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Bodman: The guy who should be on the other end of the "In Emergency -- call" button
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Bodman: I started writing as a kid, but recently, I wanted to write political thrillers after reading Nelson DeMille, Charles McCarry and Vince Flynn.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Bodman: Where we live now: Naples, Florida and Washington, DC.
