Sixty seconds with Stuart Neville...
Stuart Neville has had a varied career, he's worked as a musician, a composer, a teacher, a salesman, a film extra, a baker and a hand double for a well known Irish comedian. He is also a partner in a multimedia design business in Northern Ireland. He began writing in 2006 and his first novel, THE TWELVE, was published a year later. Known in the USA as THE GHOSTS OF BELFAST, it won the mystery/thriller category of the Los Angeles Time Book Prize. His latest book, STOLEN SOULS was published in January 2012.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Neville: I could do with a haircut.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Neville: Led Zeppelin II. So many textures and nuances amongst the hard rocking that I'd never get tired of it.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Neville: I intended on being a rock star first, then an author whenever I got to old. It didn't quite work out that way.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Neville: Dr James Morrow. We grew up together, and he was best man at my wedding.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Neville: Rudeness would be punishable by community service, like picking up litter and such.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Neville: American Tabloid by James Ellroy.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Neville: Rude, selfish people, like those who park in disabled spaces when they're not entitled to, or drop litter, or use their phones in the cinema.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Neville: Billy Wilder, David Lee Roth, William Goldman, Joni Mitchell and Jeff Beck.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Neville: Anyone rude.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Neville: Sitting up all night as a kid, reading Willard Price's Adventure books.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Neville: Santa Monica seems nice. In truth, I'd just like to be able to afford to live there.
