Miyuki Miyabe is one of Japan's most popular authors. She started writing when she was working in a law office. She has written dozens of novels across several genres. Several of her crime fiction books have been translated into English, most recently The Devil's Whisper.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Miyabe: I’m a mystery writer who loves horror and mystery stories.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Miyabe: A collection of the best screen music.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Miyabe: A painter.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Miyabe: A classmate from my high-school days.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Miyabe: I would like to eliminate the concept of “ruling.”
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Miyabe: A Simple Plan by Scott Smith.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Miyabe: Being untidy, slovenly, and unfocused. I myself sometimes lead an unfocused life.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Miyabe: I dislike parties.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Miyabe: A drunk.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Miyabe: Inspiration doesn’t come all by itself. If you make an effort and think a lot about your story, inspiration follows.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Miyabe: I am totally satisfied in the Tokyo neighborhood I live in now.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Miyabe: A story about a family possessed by the spirit of a dead girl, and a reporter who comes across the family.
