Sara Paretsky is one of the best-known crime fiction writers in the field, thanks to her long-running VI Warshawski series. Her latest book, BLEEDING KANSAS, is a standalone which looks at small-town middle America.

Paretsky: My friends call me Dr Demento.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Paretsky: Don Giovanni.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Paretsky: I wanted to be Margot Fonteyn.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Paretsky: Isabel Thompson – we met in graduate school and found we laughed at the same jokes.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Paretsky: I wouldn't.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Paretsky: Marilynne Robinson's Gilead.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Paretsky: Litter in the park and anything that Dick Cheney does.

RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Paretsky: Dick Cheney.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Paretsky: My older brother, Jeremy. He taught me to write when I was five, and started me writing short stories and plays.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Paretsky: Barcelona.
