Sixty seconds with Brian McGilloway...
Schoolteacher and Northern Irish writer Brian McGilloway sets his series featuring Garda Inspector Benedict Devlin in the border country between the north and the Republic of Ireland.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
McGilloway: A 34-year-old father, husband, teacher and crime writer.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
McGilloway: This one is difficult as my music both depends on and determines my mood. Tom Waits, The Divine Comedy, Ed Harcourt should all feature. For an all-round great album, I’d take the special edition of Songs From The Deep Forest by Duke Special. The special edition has an extra CD of Duke singing with the Ulster Orchestra.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
McGilloway: I started studying biochemistry and genetics at university, then changed to English teaching, whilst always secretly wanting to be a writer, so career planning has never been a strong suit.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
McGilloway: Glen Doherty who is now a doctor in Dublin. We were at school together and have stayed in touch since.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
McGilloway: It would be as messy as my desk.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
McGilloway: There are plenty of great books I love, though obviously if I’d written them they wouldn’t be great books anymore. The Great Gatsby is one such book, or anything by James Lee Burke.
RTE: What makes you angry?
McGilloway: People who think that it’s OK to take everything they can from this world and give nothing back.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
McGilloway: My family and friends are just fine for me. Serious dinner parties seem too much like hard work.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
McGilloway: Someone who panics even more than I would in a confined space.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
McGilloway: Great books and good teachers. I wrote Borderlands, the first Devlin, after reading Last Car to Elysian Fields, because I got a sense – incorrectly, it turns out – that it would be the end of the series. I decided to write my own series that I would enjoy, just in case. I still try to apply that criterion to anything I write – I need to want to read it myself.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
McGilloway: I live with my wife and children in the Irish countryside surrounded by fields near the local river with a pair of buzzards nesting in the fields behind. I’m exactly where I want to be, thanks.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
McGilloway: Robbery, drugs, planted evidence, murders, crucifixion – your average Irish border-town week.
