Gianrico Carofiglio is an anti-mafia prosecutor in the southern Italian town of Bari, and the author of the series featuring defence lawyer Guido Guerrieri.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Carofiglio: A person always looking for balance, never finding it, and quite happy about this . . .
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Carofiglio: A pen.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Carofiglio: A cartoonist and a zoologist.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Carofiglio: He is a doctor, we met when we were ten years old. We were (and are) completely different; this is probably the reason why we're still friends.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Carofiglio: I would get crazy. I am sure I am not gifted for that job.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Carofiglio: The Little Prince.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Carofiglio: Many things, but most of all vulgarity.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Carofiglio: Zapatero, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Jobs, Barack Obama, Monica Bellucci.
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Carofiglio: Monica Bellucci (coming out of that dream dinner . . .)
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Carofiglio: The disturbing idea that I was wasting my life and my dreams. This happened when I was 39, and I suppose, had something to do with sort of a midlife crisis.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Carofiglio: I really love big cities, like New York, Berlin, Rome.
RTE: Sum up your latest book in no more than 12 words.
Carofiglio: It's about broken dreams, trials, good, evil, changing, never surrendering, friendship.
But some people say it is a legal thriller . . .
