Sixty seconds with Sheila Quigley...
Sheila Quigley has had a rags-to-riches story. She was living on a council estate in the north east of England when she signed a £300,000 deal with Random House. Her latest book is EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE.
RTE: Describe yourself in a sentence?
Quigley: Loyal, caring, with a wee bit of a temper, and a crazy sense of humour according to my grand daughter.
RTE: What's the one record you'd take to a desert island?
Quigley: Living On A Prayer.
RTE: What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Quigley: It varied between three things – a mountain climber, an astronaut, and a writer.
RTE: Who's your oldest friend?
Quigley: Margaret Orme. We went to school together and still see each other often.
RTE: If I ruled the world...
Quigley: Hard to say in a sentence. Eradicate poverty would be my first goal.
RTE: Which book do you wish you'd written?
Quigley: Gone With The Wind.
RTE: What makes you angry?
Quigley: Racism, bigotry and prats who think they are better than anyone else.
RTE: Name your five dream dinner party guests.
Quigley: Stephen King, Terry Deary, the Pope, Tom Cruise and the Queen. Now that's an electric mix!
RTE: Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
Quigley: A total bore.
RTE: What inspired you to start writing?
Quigley: I think you are born with the need to write – it is as essential as breathing.
RTE: Where would you most like to live?
Quigley: Right where I do, an hour from The Lake District, an hour from the Scottish borders, half an hour from Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland, one of the most rugged and beautiful places in the world.

Quigley: Gritty, scary in parts with deep family love in others.
