Once upon a time Mitch Rapp was a talented college athlete with a promising future. All that changed in the blink of an eye on December 21, 1988 when Pan Am flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland killing everyone on board including Mitch's high school sweetheart, Maureen Eliot. Instead of going into heavy mourning, he wanted revenge; he wanted blood. He wanted to find everyone responsible of this cowardly terrorist attack and he wanted to make them pay. In the space of a very short time he became one of the CIA's most powerful terrorist hunters working for the United States. He has appeared in over ten popular novels and his appeal has not diminished.

AMERICAN ASSASSIN is, in essence, a prequel to this popular series. It is a good book for a newcomer as it serves as a starting point by introducing the characters and situations that loyal readers will already be familiar with. We get to see Rapp's training, his first missions, his first kills, all undertaken in order to avenge the death of his girlfriend but in the end providing a purpose to his existence.

Overall, it is a good action adventure novel involving the US fight against terrorism, pre-September 11. The thing is that since the book is a prequel there are already some foregone conclusions that one can make regarding some of the storylines. The hero will somehow survive and still catch the bad guys. If the book had come out fifteen years ago the same could not be said. It makes for an interesting read and gives reader a greater insight into the character of Mitch Rapp. AMERICAN ASSASSIN is a new book, but it does not read like a new adventure especially for readers of the previous novels. For others it may be a good beginning enticing them to then read the others. While I am not convinced that the prequel was necessary, others may disagree. All the same, I look forward to the next adventure.
