Tilda Harper loves her job and has learned how to make a living at it, albeit sometimes a rather precarious one. She is a free-lance entertainment reporter, specializing in "Where are they now?" stories. She can morph one story many different ways, and this enables her to sell basically the same story to lots of disparate markets. Right now, she is working on tracking down the cast of an old sit-com, Kissing Cousins.

This is fun for Tilda, since she has been a fan of the show forever. She's managed to locate just about everyone from the cast, even the perky and annoying twins who joined the cast at the moment when the show jumped the shark. The only one who has eluded her is the woman who played Mercy, the stranger of the cousins. There is some urgency to finding Mercy now, because three cast members have died within the last few months. By several methods of calculation, Mercy may be the next one scheduled to die.

Tilda has the usual supporting cast of supportive friends, not-so-supportive co-workers, the bosses from hell, and the standard issue love interest. The characters are entertaining, although sometimes a bit more stock than discerning readers enjoy.

The concept is topical, with so many television series doing reunions and the like. Tilda herself is a delight, although her fascination with the past seems a bit over the top sometimes. Figuring out who the bad guy is wasn't much of a problem; Tilda's discovery was one of those "I know something the reader doesn't" scenarios that can be irritating. Still, a pleasant read with characters just begging for another book.

This was first published last year under the title WITHOUT MERCY.
