FBI agent Megan Elliott is called in to investigate when two soldiers are found dead, both bearing the same unusual mutilations on their body. When one body is removed from her jurisdiction by the military police, however, Megan finds herself forced to team up with a mercenary, Jack Kincaid, who has his own reasons for the investigating the case. They will soon find out that danger lurks near to home…

SUDDEN DEATH has a fast pace and an exciting plot, although this unfortunately lacks credibility towards the end, as the identity of the second serial killer is revealed and the relationship between Kincaid and Elliott develops. If readers can ignore this rather ridiculous twist, they will find a novel that can make an easy transition to the big screen, what with its requisite action, sex, violence and excitement. It is true that Brennan does not spend much time on flowing, literary prose, but that is unnecessary, given that the book is about a race against time to track down serial killers before it is too late.

Brennan has developed a fondness for recurring characters and anyone who has read her previous works will welcome the return of such characters as Elliott and Hans Vigo. It was easy to slip back into the world of these figures, but at times, I felt that this gave the novel a sense of déjà vu, as I was often gripped by the feeling that I had read this novel, or something very like it, somewhere before. That said, however, the characters can all cross seamlessly from novel to novel, which makes for pleasant reading.

There is no doubt that Brennan is an exciting new author whose books will be on the best-seller lists for some time to come. I look forward to reading more books in this series.
