There are few things that could convince undercover FBI agent Toby Wolf to "break cover," but when he discovers two missing boys, he has to take action. Revealing his whereabouts can put everything in danger, and it does in this gripping stand-alone thriller from Shamus-nominated author JD Rhoades.

Although Wolf tries to remain anonymous in the rescue of the abducted boys, his cover is blown by a local news reporter who soon becomes Wolf's hostage as he seeks to escape, both from local police and the gang. The local police and FBI are trying to figure out just what Wolf is doing: Has he gone off the grid, or is he still the loyal government man trying to bring down the bad guys? Complicating matters is a rogue FBI insider who's working with the gang, making Wolf's re-emergence impossible. The story of his undercover work with the biker gang is gradually revealed when he finally agrees to tell his story to the reporter he's taken hostage.

Author Rhoades has been called the "king of redneck noir," and it's a fitting title, given this successful mystery. He has a sure sense of place and character. He offers adept descriptions of the thugs who populate the network that works for the bikers in drug production (meth), child pornography, and prostitution. Much like other criminal networks, the biker gang operates as a family business, with the same ambitions and betrayals. Rhoades uses it all well to tell the story of Wolf's undercover work

BREAKING COVER is not for the timid. In fact, the level of violence is positively stomach turning, but the story will grip readers from the moment they open the novel till they reach the final page. From the discovery of the young boys to the final confrontation with the biker gang that Wolf has been targeting, there is a cast of horrific villains whose only goal is making money, and they will stop at nothing to destroy anyone standing in their path. For those who love a good thriller and can handle an over-the-top level of descriptive violence, BREAKING COVER is truly a diamond in the rough.
