Jack Carpenter is a former police officer who has time for neither nonsense nor bureaucrats. He is good at what he does and he will not let anyone get in his way. He is an expert in finding missing children and there is nothing that he will not do to find a kidnapped child safe and sound. He is relentless, since time is an enemy when it comes to missing children.

"The Night Stalker" of the title is Abb Grimes, a man convicted of murdering numerous women in Florida and who is about to be executed in less than four days. He hires Carpenter to help find his grandson who has been kidnapped by someone who does not want Grimes to talk to the police. For Carpenter it is all about the child and he accepts the mission with no qualms. The police and the FBI already have their minds made up about who is responsible for the snatch, but Carpenter sees things in a different light. There seems to be more to the story than he has been told and there are several people who do not want him to succeed. Carpenter's pig-headedness will be the only thing that will help find Grimes's grandson. Repercussions be damned.

Swain knows how to construct a suspenseful story even though he does strain credibility at times. He also provides just the right amount of dry humor where it is needed. As well, he is informative regarding child abduction methods. Swain has a good story here and it'll be interesting to see if he can outdo himself next time.
