Clare Prentice thought she knew exactly who she was. She was a rising young journalist, engaged to a young man with political aspirations. Her mother, her only family, died of cancer a year ago. Just when she thinks she has everything she wants and needs in life, fate throws

her a curve.

When her doctor tells her that the woman who had raised Clare was not her mother, Clare is completely shaken. All she knows from friends of the family is that Rose, her adoptive mother, was from Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Her friend‛s aunt is the town‛s librarian who also has a cottage to rent. Clare takes a leave of absence from her job and decides to head to Minnesota from Chicago to solve the mystery. Her love life is unraveling as well, as she and her fiancé have broken up. Doug‛s society family was not keen on a daughter-in-law who had no idea where she came from or who her parents might have been.

With the assistance of Ruth Grabenbauer, town librarian, her landlady and soon her friend, Clare quickly learns about her background. Rose, the woman who raised Clare, was her aunt. Lillian, her mother, was murdered and Clare‛s father was suspected of the crime. But he disappeared and shortly thereafter his body was found on the railroad tracks where he had fallen in front of a train. No one knew if he had jumped or slipped, but he was buried in the small local cemetery in town.

At first Clare gives everyone the impression that she is simply a journalist who is in town to interview a reclusive author who lives there – and that part is true. However, she tells people that she is also doing a retrospective story on Lilian‛s murder. Eventually, the truth comes out that she is Lillian‛s daughter. Suddenly, she feels in danger, an attempt is made on her life, and a person who wanted to talk to her has died, apparently by accident, but foul play is possible.

I loved all the characters in this book. The author has written a large number of both mystery and romance novels. This book combines elements of both. Clare meets someone she could learn to care for, if she can solve the mystery of her mother‛s death. The retired sheriff, who never believed that her father was guilty, also tries to help. This a quick read, possibly because you won‛t want to put it down! The small town atmosphere and the quirky and interesting characters combine to make the reader want to find out how both the mystery and the love story turn out.
