Hybrids, part demon and part human, walk among us. Ramsey is an angel in a human body, aware of the hybrids and looking to kill as many of them as possible in order to prevent the Lord of Bones from coming into the world. Lord of Bones is also known as the Traveler, and he takes everything from a world that he can and moves on. Not good for those in the world when he arrives, I'm pretty sure.

Jess is an artist, a painter; she is being trained by Kai Youngblood in the ways of magic. He's older than dirt, by at least several centuries. The irony in his latest name is not an accident. Kai is one of a larger group known as the Summoners. Jess is almost ready for her "trial," a test she must pass before becoming a Summoner. Since she doesn't come from the right bloodline, there are those in the group who do not support her candidacy.

Lucas Maddox is an old rock star, old in the sense that he's been around a while, not just chronologically old. For some reason, Lord of Bones has some connection to him, wants something from him. Lucas is the man who gave Ramsey to the demons. He shares dreams with Jess, dreams she doesn't share with Kai.

LORD OF BONES reminded me in some way of Stephen King's THE STAND. I haven't read that in years, so this is kind of vague, and don't hold me to it strictly. Musk tells this story from inside Jess's head for a while, then Ramsey's, then Lucas's, and once in a while Kai's. Each bit of the story moves the reader closer to understanding what's going on, and yet none of it is really clear, even at the end. This coming to the end from various places builds suspense while giving us a bit more about each character every time we meet them again. Still, I found LORD OF BONES to be unsatisfying in that the ending is quite nebulous. Perhaps that is intentional. LORD OF BONES is the sequel to BLOODANGEL, which I presume is Ramsey's backstory. If this is the middle book in a trilogy, that ambiguity is probably good. Fans of dark fantasy will probably enjoy LORD OF BONES more than I did; the writing is certainly good enough to recommend it.
