Mary DiNunzio is trying to negotiate a peaceful resolution of the conflict between her father's Dean Martin fan club and the women of the Frank Sinatra fan club when an old nemesis shows up unexpectedly at Rosato & Associates. Trish Gambone was one of the Mean Girls, a group that belittled Mary during her years at St. Maria Goretti High School, but now she needs Mary’s help. Trish is afraid of her boyfriend, Bobby Mancuso. Bobby sells drugs for the Philadelphia mob when he's not drinking or abusing Trish. Now he wants to marry Trish, but Trish wants to escape his brutality. Terrified that Bobby will kill her if she follows Mary's advice and gets a restraining order, Trish flees the law office after accusing Mary of betraying her.

Mary is consumed with guilt after her meeting with Trish. She'd known Bobby years before, and she kept a secret from him that causes her pain even now. Her guilty feelings intensify the next day when three other Mean Girls arrive at her office with the news that Trish is missing. Did Bobby propose as Trish suggested? And did he kill her when she turned him down? Driven by thoughts of the past, Mary forsakes her job at the law office and teams up with the Mean Girls to find Trish Gambone.

After a five-year lapse, the women of Rosato & Associates are back in print to delight their many fans in this latest novel by Lisa Scottoline. Mary DiNunzio’s lovable but wacky family shares a starring role in this tale that explores the impact of previous events on present lives. Attuned to the unchangeable nature of her parents and their Italian-American neighborhood, Mary must fight her natural instinct to cling to old memories and attitudes both in her personal and her professional life. Dwelling in the past, particularly when it comes to her late husband, has had a stifling effect on Mary's love life. A new man emerges in this book, one who may in future novels win Mary's heart forever. Scottoline also hints at a future partnership for Mary in Rosato & Associates, something unimagined in earlier books.

Bennie, Judy, and Anne play their parts in LADY KILLER, but this is really Mary's story. And as always, Scottoline gives us the best in secondary character description, plotting, and setting. While the author offered readers new characters to enjoy in her last few books, Mary and the gang will always top the ranks for this reviewer.
