Harry Dresden is the only wizard who advertises his services in the Chicago phone directory. He and his apprentice, Molly Carpenter, daughter of Michael and Charity, are trying to stop snowballs thrown by Molly's siblings when they are attacked by faeries who appear as monsters.

Charity and Harry defeat the monsters when they are attacked by Gruffs (goat-like fae as in Billy-Goat-Gruff) sent by Queen Titania of the Summer court. The gruffs are troll killers. The trolls come from Queen Mab of the Winter Court. And Harry is indebted to Queen Mab.

There are three swords wielded by knights who are pure at heart. Michael Carpenter is one. Harry and Charity, although at odds in earlier books, seem to have reached a truce in this one, since they found out that Molly has wizard powers and must be trained or be put to death by the council. A second sword is held by an equally righteous man. Harry holds the third, waiting for the proper person to give it to. Sort of like The Sword in the Stone, but Harry, not a stone, has to make the decision as to who is pure enough to wield it.

Karrin Murphy, reduced in rank from lieutenant to sergeant, is practically the only member of the Chicago police force who believes in Harry, but she is no longer in charge of the paranormal investigating group so she has to help Harry without her superiors knowing. And of course, there is Harry's half-brother, a vampire . . .

OK, confused enough? This is the tenth book in the Dresden series. The short-lived TV series used only the names from the books. The rest of the series, which only lasted one season on TV, had very little or nothing to do with the books. Ignore the series, which was a bit of fun, and read the books. But you have to start at the beginning. To start with number ten will throw you into great confusion.
