Seven years ago, Paul Hardy was discovered near death in a railroad car. He has been living at Harmony House, a restored mansion, home to severely disabled adults. His mind and his body were destroyed but he has gained rapport with several of the other damaged people who live at the home. He works hard and helps out whenever he can.

One day, an outing is planned. Helen Willis, the director of Harmony House is helping one of the residents into a bus when the wheelchair that Paul is pushing gets loose. In order to protect the woman in the chair, Paul puts himself in jeopardy. The woman is saved but Paul is hit by the car.

The next day, when Helen visits Paul in hospital, she finds that he has been subjected to plastic surgery, paid for by the driver of the vehicle that hit him. His face has been rebuilt and the injuries from both incidents have been repaired. Paul begins to remember. He remembers a name and has a vision of palm trees.

Helen looks up the name, Wesley Allen Howard, on the search engines but finds too many leads to pursue. Shortly thereafter, the feds come looking for information, terrorizing Helen and the inmates of the home, one of whom helps 'Paul' to escape. Paul heads east and south searching for his identity.

Ford is especially good at establishing discrete characters. There are lots of people in this book and all are individuals. The feds tend to run together, but they aren't really important. There are the Japanese gardener for whom Paul works, the girl with punk hair who takes him with her and doesn't ask questions, and the young son of a crack 'ho who helps Paul while Paul helps him, among others. Perhaps Waterman and Corso are gone for good. They will be missed but I will be looking forward to whoever Ford brings us next.
