Sadie Novak's brother Brian committed suicide. There was no one to clean up after him; the second grade teacher took over the task so her parents wouldn't have to do the job. Shortly thereafter, she quit teaching and opened Scene-2-Clean, a crime scene clean-up company, where she learned that she could see and hear murder victims (not suicides).

After several unsatisfactory employees, Sadie finally settled on Zack Bowman, a discredited cop. He's been with her for a year, and has never backed out on her, no matter how disgusting the crime scene. Actually, Sadie goes the extra step for her clients. She calls restoration companies and has the damage caused by the necessity to cleanse the house thoroughly, sometimes to even taking up flooring and destroying walls, made better. She doesn't want the relatives to be upset by seeing what damage had been caused by their loved one's demise. (By the way, this is very different from a mid-western company owned by a couple of self-proclaimed Christians, who clean up but leave chunks of floor and walls and carpeting missing, telling the relatives it is not their job to have things returned to normal. See AFTERMATH by Gil Reavill).

Sadie and Zack are called to the site of a murder/suicide. A handsome blond man appears at her shoulder. She thinks he is a ghost. Sadie later finds that he is alive and tries to track him down. The dead wife, Trudy, does appear to Sadie, but Trudy is silent. Sadie will have to learn to interpret her appearances.

THE REMAINS OF THE DEAD is the first Ghost Duster Mystery. There is sufficient information about cleaning up crime scenes for people like me, weirdoes who have to know how things work, and a good story in the work of Scene-2-Clean as well as a possible budding romance between Sadie and Zack. This is worth a try for those of you who like the cozier side of mystery with a little bite.
