Mrs Jeffries, along with the other members of Inspector Witherspoon's household staff are asked to look into the murder of Mrs Muran, a kind and good woman who was shot during a street theft. The person asking for help is a friend of the man who was convicted of the crime. He is certain that the wrong man has been found guilty. Even though there is the fear that they might prove the man innocent but not be able to stop the execution, the staff take on the case in the name of justice.

All the while trying to keep their investigation secret from Inspector Witherspoon, the staff go about their meticulous investigation by using their downstairs contacts all around town, including kitchen staff of other homes, greengrocers and butchers' helpers. Each member of the household does what they do best, they question everyone in sight and bring their information back to the kitchen to discuss with each other. Then they all ponder what they've found and what still needs to be uncovered.

This time the going is slow and the fact that the execution day is fast approaching weighs heavily on everyone's mind, especially Mrs Jeffries. She fears that they will not be in time to reverse the verdict before the convicted man dies and all of them will suffer emotionally.

MRS JEFFRIES APPEALS THE VERDICT is the 21st book in this series and I'm happy to report that it is appealing and a lovely book to read. Not only do the readers get to go along on the multiple interviews with everyone around town learning interesting tidbits about the social norm and opinions of everyday people in this time period, but we also get a perfect bird's eye view of the end of the Victorian era. Small bits of information about the women's suffragette movement, the new science of crime scene investigation and the way that the old social views were changing all blend together to make this an exceptionally interesting book.

Filled with perfectly fleshed-out characters, this book will enchant any cozy fan. The location draws you in and the fascinating people there will lock you into the story through to the final sentence.

I've only read two of the series so far and I am thrilled to know that I have a wealth of other Mrs Jeffries books still left to be read. This latest installment has completely hooked me on the series.
