Moie, a shaman from a South American tribe, arrives in Miami with the protection of his god, Jaguar. He has come to Miami to stop those destroying the rainforest and his home. Moie meets a group of grassroots environmentalists who try to help him on his mission but they are not able to provide all of the help he needs. Shortly after his arrival certain affluent Miami businessmen begin dying. The one thing that all of their deaths have in common is what looks to be claw marks on the bodies and at the crime scenes.

The police contact former police detective Jimmy Paz. Paz has a reputation for investigating and solving spooky things so his experience is needed in this investigation. Also he has connections to some of the dead businessmen. It is hoped that he will be able to find this killer before another victim is claimed.

Unfortunately the situation is not that simple. Paz and his family have all been having nightmares involving a Jaguar. While everyone is unwilling to admit to having these dreams, it greatly impacts on their lives. Paz becomes more concerned about protecting his family from supernatural influences than about proper police procedures. Only by embracing his mother's belief system and his own heritage will Paz be able to save himself and his family. The only question is whether or not Paz has waited too long.

NIGHT OF THE JAGUAR includes many supernatural elements. The primary theme is that the spiritual world influence daily life. The spiritual world found in this book is not the Christian world of angels and peaceful/beneficial beings. These gods and spirits have the ability to protect and destroy individuals. They interact with the material world at all times and on all levels.

For example, the killer believes he becomes a large cat as his god wills. Also, Paz believes he can protect his family if he becomes open to the spirits of his heritage. These supernatural beliefs are a little unusual to the average person, yet are vital to the plot of this book.

Like the books before it, NIGHT OF THE JAGUAR places Paz in a situation where he is forced to deal with things that do not normally exist in this world. Paz is something of an outsider and this is reflected in his investigative style. Even when he was a member of the police department, he seemed to act outside of the standards set by others. This independence and self-assurance helps keep the series entertaining and thought-provoking.
