Lord Alexander Hawke is a descendant of the English pirate Blackhawke and uses his ancestor's reputation to get him what he wants. He is a talented special agent, who always gets the bad guy.

When ASSASSIN opens, he is getting married to Vicky Sweet. Unfortunately his wife is murdered as they leave the church. His response is to retreat as the investigating parties will not allow him or his friends to help hunt down the killer.

However, Hawke is not allowed to mourn long nor is he allowed the time to start his own investigation. Someone is targeting American diplomats both abroad and in the States. This assassin or possibly assassins are also killing family members and any others that appear near the intended victim.

Hawke is forced to split his resources as he focuses on the international killings and two of his friends focus on his wife's death. The more they all investigate, the more it appears that Vicky was in fact the first victim of the assassins. Hawke must stay on his toes in order to find the killers before another victim is claimed.

ASSASSIN is a typical example of the super-agent, action adventure novel. For a reader that enjoys this general type of thriller, he or she should love this book. The one thing that makes this book stand out is Lord Alexander Hawke. He is a super action character. In fact, he and James Bond have a lot in common; yet, Hawke has a bit more depth to his personal life and interactions with the other characters. While he seems capable of stopping conspiracies and rescuing presidents, he also has the ability to understand people's loss and their despair.

Personally I feel that ASSASSIN is over the top. Reading it made me feel like I was reading an adventure story aimed at people with a love of violence and an overabundance of action. This book might make a good movie with things exploding, the high risk rescue toward the end of the book and some of the beautiful women involved but it is not my type of book. While Hawke is an interesting character, he was not interesting or developed enough for me to enjoy wading through gratuitous violence.
