With Tess Gerritsen and Karin Slaughter you know what you're getting -- real page-turners, but rivers of gore accompanying you on your journey. Gerritsen's BODY DOUBLE is no exception.

The books feature medical examiner Dr Maura Isles and homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli. Neither are the kind of woman you instinctively warm to. I'm getting to like Rizzoli much more now, but I'm still ambivalent about Isles. She's not as nuts as Kay Scarpetta nor as foolhardy as Tempe Brennan. But she's a cold, self-possessed woman with not much of a private life. BODY DOUBLE has her lusting after a Catholic priest, as you do . . .

The opening scenes of BODY DOUBLE are grabbers. Maura's been at a conference in Paris. She arrives home in Boston after her flight was delayed and her luggage lost to find her road swarming with cops. And when they see her, they all do double-takes. The reason is, a woman has been found dead in a car on Maura's drive -- and it's her double.

Tests prove that the woman is Maura's twin. Maura was adopted, so she now gets sucked into finding out some very dark and menacing family secrets.

Rizzoli, meanwhile, is stupendously pregnant and missing hubby Gabriel. Incidentally, I did wonder when maternity leave kicks in in US police forces, given she is eight months gone and in no state to be chasing criminals.

I have to admit that I did find the whodunit to be a bit weak, given the tension and menace that has gone before. One strand is fairly predictable when you think about it; the other a matter of 'OK, riiight, did you run out of suspects?' But BODY DOUBLE is a good read which kept me turning the pages at a rapid rate, although you will need a strong stomach!
