It is the last day of high school for three girls who have been friends since third grade. Josie Patel, small and athletic, who will get a gymnastics scholarship to college; Perri Kahn, a brilliant actress, and Kat Hartigan, rich, popular, beautiful, smart, and who has never said an angry word to anyone. It is also the last day of life for one of them.

The three girls go to Glendale High, in a wealthy Baltimore suburb. In fact, Glendale was named after Kat's father and uncle, twin sons of the developer. But Kat is so well liked that no one ever brings this up.

Suddenly, the principal is informed that there has been a shooting on school grounds. No one yet knows the details, but the school is evacuated using standard procedures and the police can start to try to figure out what has happened.

No one knows anything except that one girl is dead, one is badly wounded and not expected to live, and the third is slightly wounded. The only survivor who is able to speak, will not. She is concealing something, but homicide Sergeant Harold Lenhardt, and his partner, Kevin Infante, do not know what it is.

As in EVERY SECRET THING, Lippman investigates the lives of young girls; girls whose lives are essentially over by the time they reach 18. Kat, Perri, and Josie had been friends for most of their lives. What caused the estrangement of one of them during their last year in High School?

Teenage girls seem to be from another planet much of the time, but Lippman seems to be able to develop characters that help us to understand the problems of young women. Many crime fiction authors have turned to writing standalones that are not as compelling as their regular series books. Lippman is an exception.
