Brian McNulty is a bartender with a past. In WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, that past comes to reclaim part of him.

Working behind the bar at the Midtown Sheraton, McNulty is passing time while the bartenders' union decides what to do with him. When the head of the union Big John Wolinski comes to talk with McNulty, little does he realize that the past and present will collide in a case of hidden secrets that date back to the days when he was working at the Dockside in Atlantic City.

When Big John tells McNulty he will be the bar manager at the Ocean Club, it seems everything will be well. On the first night, a body is fished out of the water where the bar is. It turns out to be Aaron Adams, a manager of the Dockside where McNulty, Big John, and Greg Phillips used to work. Then, when Greg disappears, Big John asks McNulty to look into where he is.

As the disappearance heightens, we learn that Greg Phillips also lived in a New Jersey town under his real name Greg Peters with a girl, Sandra, who was crippled in a boating accident. At the same time, Big John's father, Charlie comes on the scene, but under the name of Dr Charles Wilson, an optometrist, who is also hiding lots of secrets in his past.

After a visit to Dr Wilson's office, McNulty is shot in the leg; it seems he must be getting close to somebody or something that he shouldn't get involved in. When Greg's body is found in a dump in New Jersey, more pieces fall into place, as that is where years ago, two bodies were buried; both victims friends of Big John and Charlie.

As the secrets of the past come to light, it seems McNulty is the only innocent person who doesn't want to believe what really happened all those years ago. With deft strokes, the author has written a tightly-woven mystery showing how the past does come around to haunt the present, and that there really is no going back to the past to relive the good old days.

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND shows a gritty, dark side of the bartending scene, the union's control over the people, and what happens when friends turn out to have hidden secrets.
