What do a dead body dumped in the river, a violent car wreck, and a dead mountain climber have in common? If you are DI Charlie Priest of Heckley CID in Yorkshire, you might ask that question. The dead climber was a school mate of Charlie, a man who had climbed Mount Everest and was something of a hero to his friends and neighbors.

The other two dead men had criminal pasts. In fact both of them led Charlie to Peter Wallenberg. Peter was trying for respectability but was in actuality a vicious criminal. Seems like Charlie is hearing Peter's name mentioned more frequently lately; and nothing good is being said.

Charlie is a team player and an understanding boss. He is probably much closer to the reality of police work than the more action-oriented cop books. Charlie goes to meetings, delegates work, paints - yes, he is something of an artist, having graduated from art school before entering the police force. And he is good enough to have his work displayed in local galleries. Charlie is an all-around good guy. Witty and always slightly irreverent, he appeals to the smart ass in all of us.

Charlie met a young lady named Rosie in a previous book when she was teaching a geology class he took at night school. Rosie is beautiful and smart and interesting; however, she suffers from depression and Charlie is trying to get close, but not to frighten her. Unfortunately, things are not to be for him and Rosie. I was beginning to wonder how such a nice guy has such bad luck with women. However, the author gave him a new love interest by the book's end, much to this reader's satisfaction.

Stuart Pawson has written nine previous Charlie Priest novels. All of them are engaging and intelligent books. Charlie is not a shoot 'em up copper, no violence or rough stuff for him. He depends on wit and good old-fashioned police work to solve the cases. But if that sounds uninteresting, that is not the case. He is surrounded by an outstanding supporting case of characters, among them his good friend, Dave and Dave's family.
