Smuggled heroin is being sold to dealers in London who will further distribute it. As one of them is putting their BMW into the garage, he is bopped on the head. Three men, each wearing a different mask (Alien, Frankenstein, Werewolf) are waiting for the Jamaican Yardies as they try to enter their flat in Harlesden.

The Yardies are shot, and the Alien is hit with a .22 bullet. The three men had been after cash, but they got the heroin instead. Alien dies, He is buried by his mates. One of the other two men, Keith Rose, a Metropolitan policeman for 15 years, takes the 10 kilos of heroin to Ireland and sells it as an uncut lot there.

Dan 'Spider' Shepherd is an undercover cop, working as an ostensible hired killer. Larry Hendrickson hires him to kill his partner. Larry's partner is actually stashed in a safe house. They are supposed to wind up the case within 48 hours, but the partner gives the Tony Nelson name to someone else who wants a person killed. So although Spider has been seconded to Rose's armed unit, he has to maintain a double life, with two undercover operations going at the same time.

Shepherd also has other problems. His wife had been killed in an auto accident several months earlier. Their eight-year old son had been in the car with her, but he escaped unhurt. Spider had sent him up to stay with his grandparents while he sorted out a carer for the boy.

It's fascinating to watch Spider's life unravel and then tie up again. If you've been waiting for a British Jack Reacher, 'Spider' Shepherd is as close as you are going to get. He's tough and works alone, but he does have people he cares for, not just ideals.
