DETOUR is a story of one couple's wish to have children, who end up fighting for their lives in order to keep the adopted daughter they desire. It opens in Columbia with Paul and Joanna Briedbart looking forward to meeting the child they adopted. When the nurse and driver hired to help them suggest they go out one day to sightsee, they do. When the couple returns, the baby and nurse are gone.

Hours later, when the nurse, Galina, returns, she is carrying a different child, hoping the couple won't notice the difference. However, Joanna does notice a difference, then she and Paul confront Galina at her home about this only to be kidnapped by one side of the Colombian revolution, FARC, which is smuggling drugs into the US to get money to buy arms.

This is where the story gets somewhat bogged down, as the author starts to move the action from Columbia, where Paul is forced to swallow condoms filled with cocaine in order to carry them into the US. Arriving at a destination, he discovers that someone, who is competing with the FARCs, has discovered the hideout where the drugs are supposed to be delivered.

Going to his lawyer, Miles Goldstein, Paul slowly gets into more trouble, as he is led into one deception after another. Finally, confronting Miles with all the little facts that are leading to a different story, Paul witnesses the final betrayal, as his lawyer commits suicide.

Now, Paul is really racing to find out what secrets his lawyer held in order to get Joanna out of Columbia. Along the way, another piece falls into place when he is arrested and interrogated by a DEA agent, who is now playing on both sides of the law. This new twist puts a crimp into Paul's plan to get Joanna out of Columbia, but being an intelligent player, Paul learns how to get out of this situation. More secrets are revealed, especially in Columbia, where Joanna is learning that Galina's daughter was the mistress to a drug overlord. However, there is more to the story than meets the eye.

DETOUR is a tale of betrayal and loyalty, love and murder, with twists that keep the reader guessing. The only drawback is that some of the characters are introduced early on, then disappear for quite a while, then make a brief appearance, causing the reader to wonder where they came from. But overall, DETOUR is a fast read for those who like a twisty tale.
