Told from a first person point of view, TO DIE FOR is a not a crime novel. In fact I do not believe it is a very suspenseful romantic crime novel either. I would put it under the heading of chick lit. It is the type of novel that one takes to the beach and reads in a couple of hours.

Blair Mallory has everything she could wish for; she runs a successful fitness club, has a loving and supportive family, and managed to divorce her husband without any hassle. The only fly in the ointment is a troubled member of her club who insists on imitating her. When the woman is shot dead and Blair witnesses the incident, she finds herself much to her dismay (but to his delight) once again under the eagle eye and hands of Lieutenant Wyatt Bloodsworth.

The chemistry between the two of them is electric and they cannot keep their hands off each other, but as to who is going to win the battle is extremely debatable as they are constantly at odds with one another as well. Further attempts are made on Blair's life and soon everyone is beginning to wonder whether the first homicide was indeed a case of mistaken identity or if there is someone who hates Blair so much, that they will do anything to kill her.

It is a shame that this is being marketed as a crime novel because while more than one crime does take place and we do find out in the end who is trying to kill Blair, it is not really the essence of the book. This is a book about the battle of the sexes and it is interesting to see who comes out on top. It appears at times that the police procedural aspect (what there is of it) seems to have been hurriedly inserted so as to justify the relationship between Bloodsworth and Mallory. Furthermore, the turquoise cover and the picture on the front of the book does it no justice whatsoever.

Despite that, Linda Howard is good at what she does. She is good at writing about the strong alpha male and in TO DIE FOR this is no exception. Who would not want to have a gorgeous, sexy police Lieutenant to depend on? This is an extremely likeable novel that is well worth reading even if you only want to spend the time laughing. An easy read with lots of humour and comic timing and with more romance than suspense, TO DIE FOR is a more than welcome addition to the numerous books written by Linda Howard.
