Englishman, nicknamed for his last name, is the sheriff of Benteen County, Kansas. Usually, in this quiet out-of-the-way part of life, nothing much happens except for the sheriff watching speeding vehicles and arresting the occasional male for drunk and disorderly conduct.

A PBS crew has decided to send some present day American Indians back to the past with This Old Tepee to live in a somewhat Survivor-type lifestyle. Unfortunately, someone shoots an arrow into the back of a 16-year-old boy who was making love to an 18-year-old cast member and things start to become a little crazy. Also, the arrow used was an authentic Cheyenne arrow from a previous century..

To complicate Englishman's life, his wife Judy decides she is going to Paris, France, immediately. She has always dreamed of going there, so she calls the airlines, arranges for the tickets, finds her husband's passport, and delivers an ultimatum for him to go with her. Judy will leave for Paris whether Englishman is there or not.

With these two events occupying Englishman's mind, he is then overwhelmed when the bank is then robbed and bombed, pipe bombs seem to be appearing all over his county, and his brother -- nicknamed Mad Dog -- can't be found. The town council is also considering investing in a wind farm for this community but to do so they would have to take Mad Dog's home.

PLAINS CRAZY is a wonderful journey to a sleepy Kansas community where too much happens in too little time. The characters are extremely well-developed and their personality traits make them very human. The storytelling of J M Hayes is perfectly-paced, realistic, comical and sympathetic to the characters. This is writing at its best.
