Gwen Gellman resigned from the Providence police department under a cloud of suspicion. After several officers were killed in a shoot-out in a nightclub, Gwen was generally shunned by most of her fellow officers. Knowing the facts as she did, and that some of her reports and evidence were missing, Gwen felt she had no choice but to leave the force. She now works as a private eye, mostly working with missing children. Gwen, who grew up in the foster care system, never knew her parents and knows what it's like to feel lost.

Gwen has certain attributes that make her a better than average investigator. She sometimes 'sees' things; she can't explain the feelings that come over her from time to time, but she has learned over the years that it is best to keep those things to herself.

When the wife of a prominent attorney comes to Gwen to hire her to find her missing 14-year-old daughter, Meredith, who has been missing for four days, Gwen wonders why the police weren't called. Dianne Cody says her husband reported the disappearance but she feels nothing is being done.

Gwen agrees to take the case and immediately discovers many unsettling aspects. For instance, she can't understand the father's reluctance to cooperate with her, nor his lie that he had contacted the police. And she doesn't trust his motives when she learns he is a member of a disreputable gentlemen's club that caters to men who like young women - very young women.

Gwen is a hard-nosed former cop who has seen it all - or so she thinks. But as the case evolves, she discovers things about herself that are unsettling. The people she comes into contact with, especially one she meets in Cody's office, the possessor of an unusual gem, are unusual, to say the least. Although she is over the age of 30, Gwen is able to pass for a high school student. Now she has met several people who also do not seem to age. What exactly is their connection to her?

The author is a fantasy writer who has blended police procedure with elements of psychic ability - rather more than ESP, Gwen is a member of an older race, those who Remember. Suffice it to say, that not all of her new-found clan are honorable and there is a reason for their seeking out Gwen.

Gwen is a fascinating character and the book moves at a lightening-fast pace. It's a hard book to put down and is easily read in one sitting. The ending left some events unresolved and surely there is a sequel in the future. This is definitely a very unusual detective story, certainly not a typical mystery, but it kept me on the edge of my seat.
