King Halaravilli of Morenia is forced to flee his kingdom with a few faithful retainers. The surprise attack from a seemingly loyal friend forces King Hal to flee without resources or supplies. Along with his soldiers, Rani Trader, a glasswright, accompanies him.

Rani and King Hal have a long history of friendship and he frequently relies on her skills as a merchant to help him with his governmental negotiations. As they plot their next move, they learn that their hiding place is not as safe as they once thought. The Fellowship of Jair, the organization that forced King Hal out of his kingdom, has a stronghold in the area. In addition, a local hedge witch seems to have secrets that could result in their deaths. King Hal and Rani Trader must use their wits to keep their lives and overcome the evil that threatens the kingdom of Morenia.

All of the characters in this book seem to be searching for their destinies. Rani Trader has had a troubled past and hopes that she will finally be able to realize her own fate. King Hal has had many threats against his kingdom as well as his wife, but he has hopes that he will finally be able to enjoy success.

The one thing that was uncomfortable for me was the idea that no one seemed to have any control over their own lives. Even though these characters are constantly striving for something, they do not seem to know what it is they are trying to accomplish in their private and personal lives. This does not detract from the story - it is just a pet peeve of mine.

THE GLASSWRIGHT'S MASTER features an established cast of characters and situations. While it is possible to understand the plot and the events of this book, it is difficult to understand how they all fit into the larger theme of their history. By starting with this book-- the fourth book to feature Rani Trader -- I felt as though I did not truly understand the interactions between characters and their motivations for their actions.
