Not since her Edgar-nominated novel, A PLACE OF EXECUTION, has Val McDermid written a powerhouse as she has with her latest work, THE DISTANT ECHO. Once again the past is going to play a major role, particularly in the lives of four Scottish students.

In 1978, these four boys were leaving a party when they discovered the body of a murdered young woman. They contacted the cops to report the finding, but that proved to be a mistake. They are seen as the main suspects and their lives are never going to be the same. They were never officially charged due to lack of evidence, but it has left a mark, which they have carried as a burden for the rest of their lives. They all claim that they are innocent, but regardless of that, they will continue to remain suspect under everyone's eyes in town.

Now 25 years later the death of Rosie Duff has been reopened as a cold case. Some are looking forward to the truth coming out; others are not. With a sense of déjà vu someone is targeting the four suspects once again, but is it an act of vengeance or something worse?

Val McDermid unlocks the puzzle pieces one by one as she delves into the lives of all the players, their pasts and their presents. There are surprises along the way as well as some hidden motives. Once the truth is finally revealed it will be the end for some; for others, it will create a new beginning. All because of one lie.

The unabridged audio recording is read by Tom Kotcher. American audiences may have some trouble deciphering his accent at first, but it is only temporary. Kotcher does a superb job characterizing the grief of some of the characters as well as some of the Scottish town's folk where the story takes place. He does justice to McDermid's work and it is highly recommended. Try it today.
